****

The Energy Crisis continues to create heavy environmental,
political and military fallout. The disastrous conflict in the
Middle East is

related directly to the oil crisis. How are we as ordinary citizens to

respond to this?

If like Governor Schwarzenegger, we held a high political office,
we might follow a similar conservation program. His actions are most

admirable.

What I propose to discuss here is a grassroots, community-oriented

approach to protecting our environment, our families and our way of life;

an action plan that any of us can follow. an action plan for ordinary citizens

that can be readily replicated, community by community.

There are two attitudes that defeat us before we begin. “What can I do?

I’m just one person. I have no power.”  And, “The government will take

care of it."

Nobody but ourselves is going to take care of anything. And we have the

resources to do this."

Admittedly, this plan might be more difficult to implement in a city versus a

town, village or country setting but it might be modified in its details
while remaining true to the essential principles and required actions.

I believe that each of the following components is critical for overall success.
For example, creating the means for people to increase their income
and wealth is critical because there is a cost to implementing green policies
and action plans whether on a family or a community level.

For example, switching to renewable energy might require a substantial

initial investment. It might be economically feasible over a ten or fifteen year

payback period but that is of little help when faced with a substantial initial

investment. Therefore the income and wealth of individuals, families and

communities are critical.

This is a large vision and therefore it is very important that the implementation
is highly focused, simple and presented step by step. As we implement in a

given community we document the steps so that the same vision may be

replicated with ease in other communities.  We can think of this as Viral

Community Marketing as the benefits spread from community to community.

What are the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for this Plan?

1. Awareness of the resources and guidance available
2. Community-wide commitment

3. As much as possible supporting and relying on local resources
4. Having an agreed upon action plan
5. Not leaving anybody behind

1. Awareness of the resources and guidance available

The Internet allows for easy access to critical resources.
What is required is   thorough research and careful selection
of reliable and relevant resources. The research and selections

we have already completed have advanced the process.
We intend to continue our research and evaluation of companies,

products and services. We will report continuously to those who

join us. At some point we will set up a members’ forum
so we can all share our experiences and knowledge.
In addition we created an online board of advisors expert in

various critical areas.

2. Community-Wide Commitment

If everybody knows that all will benefit from the plan then

community-wide commitment should be possible. The commitment

needs to be public and   shared. We will document the actions we

take to gather community-wide support.

3. Supporting and Relying on Local Resources
For each local community that initiates the Total Health Circle links

will be made to the websites of local supplieers of organically grown food

and so forth. For example, surrounding Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia,

my home community, there are several farms providing a wide variety

of organic vegetables, fruits and meats. We will create links to each of

the websites of these farms. As we shall discuss, these are not the only

local resources we need but these are a critical component of our vision

and action plan. However some connection to the global economy is

necessary.

4. Having an Agreed Upon Action Plan
Unless we take action nothing happens. All the plans in the world are

useless unless action is taken. Further, we cannot wait until we have

everything in place and/or everybody agreeing on everything.
It is necessary to step forward and begin when we know we might be

better prepared and better provisioned. We will have to learn as we

go along and make decisions on the spot. Whatever you do, or dream

you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

5. Not Leaving Anybody Behind
This relates to uplifting the economic, environmental and total health of

the whole community. We should aim for nothing less. Most of us have

grown up being taught that the focus of our social responsibility
is to our family. We should extend that responsibility to our community.
It will allow for the creation of a protective container for everybody.

Let’s Briefly Discuss Each of the Areas in the Total Health Circle

1. Environment.
We must protect our environment. Like Governor Schwarzenegger we

can regard “environmental injury as deficit spending loading the cost of

this generation’s prosperity on to the backs of our children.”
Quoted from Arnold Schwarzenegger. The green Governor experiences

his Teddy Roosevelt moment. By Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Time Magazine,

May 14, 2007, page 39

2. Energy.
We need to switch to renewable energy: solar, wind, geo-thermal.
Fossil fuel use creates environmental injury and our fossil resources

are running out. This is not the place to discuss the complexity of the

energy issue or the exploration of other energy sources such as Cold

Fusion. On the level of community action, renewable energy has become

economically feasible and readily available. This is what we should focus on.

Please visit: http://www.tggsenergy.com.

 ___________________________________________________________________

Promoting renewable energy alone is not sufficient.

We favour an eight pronged approach as follows:

              ___________________________________________________________________

3. Construction
.
We are running out of lumber. Various companies are exploring the creation of

alternate building materials. We are researching this area.

4. Community:
Sustainable community development aims to integrate economic, social and environmental objectives in community development. Sustainable community development is based on a consideration of the relationship between economic

factors and other community elements such as housing, education, the natural environment, health, accessibility and the arts. SCD has emerged as a compelling alternative to conventional approaches to development, a participatory, holistic and inclusive process that leads to positive, concrete changes in communities by creating employment, reducing poverty, restoring the health of the natural environment, stabilizing local economies, and increasing community control.

The
SFU Centre for Sustainable Community Development (CSCD), formerly the Community Economic Development Centre, was founded in 1989.  The Centre’s

mission is to support the sustainable development of communities through research, education (credit and non-credit), and community mobilization; it provides research, training and advisory services throughout BC and Canada as well as internationally.

5. Management
We are contemplating the development of a software tool for direct use
by managers directed to the evaluation of human capital.
We are at the very early stages.

6. Aging
Send for FREE position paper to drgeorge@safe-mail.net
with
AGING as the subject.

7. Food
Research your community’s access to local and organic food.
These will be the links you build. Seriously consider establishing a Local

Exchange and Trading System,  a LETS program to support your local

economy and to make your local resources for food and beyond

comprehensively visible.

8. Home
Research has shown that our homes are areas of high pollution caused by

the various dangerous chemicals contained in the cleaning products we use.
But it is possible to obtain green products that are highly effective cleaners
that keep our homes safe. This is especially important for children and the

elderly who are more susceptible to the negative effects of dangerous chemicals.

Visit here: http://www.shaklee.ca/Member.jsp?bid=753811

Shaklee is a well-established and well-managed company that provides excellent

green products and the opportunity for their customers to become business

affiliates and create a passive income. As my grandfather, Samuel Marshall, taught

me, “Always listen, look and then make up your mind.”

9. Self and family
Are you interested in enhancing your family’s health through the use of

vitamins and supplements?  If yes then please consider Puritan’s Pride

as your primary source. I have been a satisfied customer of Puritan’s Pride

for over 7 years. Their products, value, and service are superb.

10. Finances
We have developed a website on Healthy Finances covering debt elimination,
building passive income, developing true wealth, and protecting ourselves

from the dangers of fiat currencies. Please feel free to visit the websites

11. Investment
Through the blog of Catherine Austin Fitts at http://www.solari.com/blog/?p=113 .
we came across http://www.kiva.org/  which provides a model that can be readily

applied to a community. Kiva.org revolutionized the fight against global poverty
by being the first nonprofit website designed to help individuals connect with and make personal loans to low-income entrepreneurs in developing countries.

With a change in focus and some rewording we will set up:

www.CommunitySupport.org which will support peer to peer lending and allow

investors to give loans to specific local applicants and thus support the economic
well-being of the community. In essense this is a local community bank
owned and controlled by the community for the benefit of the community.

12. Mind
A FREE paper entitled The Right Things Happen to the Happy Man
is available in PDF format. Very often we believe that if the right things happen

we will be happy and if the wrong things happen we will be miserable.
But a poem by the American poet, Theodore Roethke entitled,
The Right Things Happen to the Happy Man,
has it correct.  It is the opposite. Our state of mind comes first.
That doesn't mean that tragedy will leave us untouched; that would be ridiculous.
Nor for that matter will positive events necessarily propel us off into states of ecstasy.
Working with extreme emotions in a calm manner is very important for our sanity

and health. If you get depressed bring yourself up; if you start to get euphoric,
calm yourself down, don’t get too excited. How can we do that?

13. Education
A FREE paper entitled Inspiring Education will be available
in PDF format by December 31st, 2008. Two critical components, wisdom and

compassion are missing from modern western education and thought.
Why? Because we believe that sanity and thus wisdom and compassion
are our normal state and need no education, training or guidance.
Further, we have too much faith in technology and know how and not enough

emphasis on know what.

What does it take for the development of engaged students.
The paper on educa
tion will discuss three inspiring examples:

1. The work of Samuel ‘Sambo’ Mockbee;
2. The Naropa University; and
3. The Nova Scotia Sea School.

Further topics will include: the necessity for broad community involvement;
the balanced use of technology; the work of the George Lucas Foundation;
the
Oxford tutorial system; and the use of successful models from the past such as apprenticeship and seamanship; and the need for renewed respect for the

trades and crafts.

14. Online Retail Store

We are also developing an online retail store for the Total Health Circle
Some people will only be interested in the products and services and not in

the business—this is for them: http://php1.thegoodgoodsstore.com/news.php
